The Puyuma are an indigenous plains people of Taiwan (living in Taitung), typically divided into the Nanwang and Chihpen groups. They were traditionally hunters and farmers, and have marked contact with other peoples since the 17th century. They continue to celebrate rituals like the The Completion of Millet Weeding, Millet Harvest Ritual, Annual Festival for Youth, Major Hunting Ritual. However, the majority of Puyumans speak Mandarin and Taiwanese, and despite Puyuma language classes in school, the number of native speakers is falling as less younger Puyumans are becoming proficient in the language. There are currently about 1000 speakers, most of whom are from older generations.
